Progressive Views: Statewide Offices: Governor and Lieutenant Governor

The Democratic candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor are Gina Hinojosa and Vikki Goodwin. Their Republican opponents are Greg Abbott (Governor) and Dan Patrick (Lt. Governor). According to the Texas Tribune, Abbott has accepted over $10M in donations from million/billionaires and has demonstrated a “willingness to draw from his deep campaign coffers to support his preferred candidates and to oust Republican incumbents who disagreed in particular with his signature policy issue, school vouchers.” Patrick is “a close ally of President Donald Trump who chaired all three of his presidential campaigns in Texas” and champions “targeting LGBTQ+ Texans and restricting how race and gender can be discussed in classrooms” (per the Texas Tribune).

Progressive Views: Statewide Offices: Attorney General

The OAG serves as the state’s top law enforcement officer. The OAG’s responsibilities include defending the State of Texas and its laws by providing legal representation to the State, its officials, and agencies; serving the children of Texas through the enforcement of the state’s child support laws and the collection of child support; securing justice for Texans by investigating and prosecuting criminal activities; and more. The OAG has the power to hold politicians accountable for any wrongdoings and can promote justice and equality by advocating for policies that benefit Texas communities. A Democrat in this office will champion voting protections, reproductive rights, accessible health care, and more.

Progressive Views: Statewide Offices: Agriculture Commissioner

The Texas Department of Agriculture’s mission is to partner with all Texans to make Texas the nation's leader in agriculture, fortify our economy, empower rural communities, promote healthy lifestyles, and cultivate winning strategies for rural, suburban, and urban Texas through exceptional service and the common threads of agriculture in our daily lives. TDA is also the agency leading the charge against the New World screwworm outbreak. The agriculture commissioner oversees the agency and is elected every four years.

Progressive Views Plus: The Patriarchy is Alive and Well

Newly released by the Heritage Foundation is a report that asserts that the promotion of competitive sports for girls and women “formed a core element of a broader project to remake female character itself — producing a new woman who would be more aggressive, assertive, dominant, and less deferential, less graceful, and less oriented toward motherhood and traditional feminine graces.” Reports like this show our progress in women’s rights is not set in stone. We must fight the battle every day.

Progressive Views: Hit the Brakes on Data Centers

Although a majority of Texans oppose construction of data centers in their communities, data centers, with Governor Abbott's full support, are taking advantage of Texas’ weak regulatory structure to vastly expand their plans. Call your reps to demand that data center construction ceases until more guidelines are put in place.

Progressive Views: Dysfunction at the Top

Under Jane Nelson's leadership, the TxSoS Elections Division, previously a very efficient and responsive agency, has become much more difficult to work with. Issues run from inaccurate and late voter file updates and voter history files to not sending out voter registration cards. It’s clear that our Republican leadership wants the Texas election system to fail. It’s long past time to elect statewide leadership that works in the interests of voters, not against them. Time to elect Democratic leadership.

Progressive Views: Sowing Confusion, Trampling Rights

Our political leaders have spent years trying to convince you that your vote doesn’t matter and that the election system is corrupt; they’ve enacted unnecessary steps to make it harder to vote. All so you’ll give up and not cast your ballot. There’s plenty you can do to fight these efforts.
